Kenya's first recognition of prior learning conferment of certificates

Kenya’s first recognition of prior learning conferment of certificates to 62 Graduates training with base titanium in collaboration with NITA took place at Kwale County on 7th July 2022. The Cabinet Secretary ministry of labour Hon. Simon Chelugui was the chief guest. NITA’s Board members were present led by Mr. Mike Macharia representing the Board Chairman and the Director General Mr. Stephen Ogenga among other members of staff.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process of identifying, assessing and certifying knowledge, skills and attitudes regardless of how, when or where learning occurred. Assessment and certification is done against learning. The RPL process enables persons to acquire a formal qualification that matches their knowledge and skills which enhances employability, mobility, lifelong learning and social inclusion. The process has the following distinct features; Identifying non-formal and informal learning; Collection and presentation of evidence of learning; Assessment and validation of evidence and issuing a recognised certification if the claims are valid. In Kenya, there is need for the entrenchment of a culture of lifelong learning, recognition of prior learning as well as the required infrastructure that can help make such continued learning and training feasible. This is particularly necessary in the wake of forth industrial revolution leading to rapid technological developments in the global labour market.
