Five artisans, including Geoffrey Kioko, a veteran mason from Machakos County, were all smiles as President William Ruto handed them their national certifications during the Boma Yangu programme event. After decades of hands-on experience without formal recognition, these artisans now hold nationally recognized qualifications that enhance their employability and career prospects.
They are among over 1,200 artisans certified by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme under the Affordable Housing Project (AHP), a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Through RPL, NITA ensures that skilled workers receive formal recognition for their expertise by:
Accrediting industry-expert assessors
Approving AHP sites as Industrial Assessment Centres
Conducting assessments and awarding national certifications
This initiative empowers artisans, improves livelihoods, and strengthens Kenya’s skilled workforce.
