Like other countries, the government continues to take forceful measures to control the spread of the virus, for example encouraging the members of public to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such facemasks whenever in public. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate, 89 million medical masks are required for the COVID-19 response each month. The World Health Organization has warned that severe and mounting disruption to the global supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) caused by rising demand is putting lives at risk.
The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Labour and Social Protection Hon. Simon Kiprono Chelugui accompanied by Chief Administrative Secretary Hon Ole Ntutu and PS Labour Eng. Peter Tum visited NITA on 21st April 2020 to appreciate the Authority’s effort in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic through production of face masks and the fabrication of contactless hand wash basins. The production of the face masks begun on 31st March 2020, and is being undertaken at NITA Textile Training Institute (NTTI) at the Headquarters and NITA Athi river. NTTI is currently producing an average of 6000 high quality face masks per week. The highly quality masks are re-usable up to 3 washes if well-disinfected after use. As part of the Authority’s target under the Big Four agenda in the manufacturing sector, NITA collaborates with several local partners including County Governments, Industries and Constituencies to up skill and re-skill beneficiaries.
NITA is committed to provision and regulation of high standard industrial training geared towards solving problems such as the current COVID-19 pandemic through innovation.
